DIY Emergency Plumbing Solutions

Any plumbing situation can be extremely nerve-wracking. Just imagine, some guests are coming over and there’s a clog! Or a leakage! The horror! Nobody of us wants to face such issues and not solve them immediately. Not to worry, because there are many do it yourself solutions to such problems and all of them are easy enough for anyone. Let’s see what are the common plumbing emergencies and how should we solve them.

If a pipe bursts

This is a pretty huge emergency. It can cause basement flooding in your entire house. Now if this arises, half of us would start to panic and start dialing numbers but first of all, you must take care of matters yourself. Switch off the water meter in your homes and start draining all the water. Open all the taps for cold water in the house so that all the water gets drained out. Flush the toilets as well to speed up the process. Be sure to switch off all electronic items so that there is no possibility of an electric shock. Also, be sure to not to touch any of these electronic items with wet hands.

In case of a gas leak

A gas leak is a fatal emergency. Before you call anyone you must first take all of the safety measures. The first thing you should is a switch off all the gas appliances. Make sure that nobody smokes in the house. Be sure that you do not turn off or on any switches in the house. Anybody who smokes should go outside the house and do it. If you can turn off the main supply then do so immediately. Air out the entire house and open all windows and doors so that nobody suffocates on the gas. This is all in the case of a big gas leak. In case of a small one, turn off all gas appliances of the house and be sure to check the meter readings overnight to see the difference. If there is some then call a professional to fix it.

Blocked Toilet

If the toilet is blocked then whenever you will flush, the water will rise. The solution to this is to get a coat hanger and curve it. Put it inside the toilet and try to remove the blockage. You can also a mop and tie a plastic bag on the end of it. Try to push it in with force to remove the blockage. If none of this is working then use a drain cleaner. Be sure that you are wearing rubber gloves as these are toxic substances. Follow all the instructions that are given on the back. While doing all of these things, it is best to cover the bathroom floor with towels or sheets as it might get wet and slippery.

These are just some of the most common plumbing hazards that people face. Every problem needs a first aid like solution before so that the problem does not increase too much.
