Here’s How Often You Should Clean Your Air Ducts

Your HVAC system involves air ducts that are the pathways for heated and cooled air to move throughout your home. It is very important for proper air duct cleaning to remove dust and other debris that accumulates in the ventilation and air duct system.

Air ducts are usually found on the floors or walls of many homes with vent covers. If these are blocked, your HVAC system cannot do its job and will recirculate unhealthy particles back into the air contributing to poor air quality. Many times, the air inside our homes is more polluted than it is outside!

To keep your indoor air healthy and clean, the HVAC experts at Hoosier Heating and Cooling recommend your air duct system professionally cleaned every three to five years.

In between professional cleanings frequent cleaning is recommended taking the following into consideration:

  • Lifestyle:  Every home is different, just as every lifestyle is different. Keep in mind that smokers, pet owners, family members who suffer from, asthma, allergies and respiratory issues, homes with infants and small children or the elderly should perform air duct cleaning frequently to keep the air quality as clean as possible.

Interior upgrades like carpet/flooring installation, painting walls and other remodeling involve chemicals that effect air quality and air duct cleaning is essential to remove these pollutants.

  • Location:  Homes in warmer, high humidity areas have more moisture, mildew and mold issues that can result in unhealthy pollution and bacterial growth that circulates throughout the air.

Air duct cleaning should be performed more often than homes that are in drier climates. Be mindful of this and frequently dust and vacuum air ducts and consider adding a portable air filter to your home to capture pollutants.
