How To Build A Sustainable Home

When constructing a new eco home, build with sustainable building materials from the foundation up.

From green design to natural beds and mattresses, there are many ways to build an eco-home, says Brian Harper from environmentally friendly, green technology company crushenergy.co.uk. By using eco construction materials for the home’s foundation and frameworks, such as eco-friendly bricks, cement, and sustainable wood, a new building project is off to an environmentally friendly start. With diligence and consciousness, the result is an energy-efficient home with a healthy environment with minimal negative impact on the planet.

Eco-Friendly Cement

With a new green home, starting the foundation with eco-friendly cement is vital. Using this sustainable product is simple and cheap. It is also much more practical and of a higher quality than standard cement.

Eco-friendly cement is made from a mix of regular cement and fly ash. Fly ash is a residue of coal-fired electrical plants. By making practical use of this industrial by-product, waste is used to improve a material rather than added to the waste stream. Around a third of fly ash generated in the UK is made into concrete.

Fly ash concrete is stronger than traditional concrete. It is flexible to work with, needs less water, and is less porous because of how ash reacts with the concrete. With no health risks, improved quality and durability, and comparable installation and price, fly ash concrete benefits the planet and the homeowner.

Innovative Sustainable Building Materials — Faswall Blocks

Faswall blocks are another efficient, eco-friendly product. They are created from eighty-five per cent sawdust and fifteen per cent cement. Wood waste is recycled into building material. Wood is ground, mineralised, and bound with concrete. The result is a durable building block, a natural insulation source. It is soundproof and resistant to pests, fire, and mould. Faswall absorbs and releases water vapour, preventing damp build-up. It is ideal for humid locations.

Green Construction With Rastra

Rastra is a newly developed green construction material. First fabricated in Austria in 1972, it is known as the authentic Composite Insulating Concrete Foam. Rastra is made from 85 per cent polystyrene and 15 per cent cement.

Rastra is structurally supported with steel and concrete. This material is like Faswall because it is soundproof and immune to water damage, fire, and pests. It improves a home’s energy efficiency by delivering insulation and lasting longer than conventional materials. Because of its high degree of usefulness, it is becoming very popular in residential and commercial buildings.

Building With Sustainable Wood

Ninety per cent of new homes in the UK are constructed with timber framing. Wood is still an extremely favoured material for the framework. Although not as eco-friendly as recycled construction materials, using sustainable wood is an excellent way to make a new house as environmentally friendly as possible.

A New Eco Home

Using sustainable building materials is just the start of creating a new eco home. Energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and eco-friendly products and appliances are all part of the equation. While commitment, flexibility, and creativity are needed for green construction, you will feel the positive results for decades.
